Selenium (Se)
Selenium (Se) is an essential mineral element for both human and animal nutrition. In humans, Se deficiency is associated with hypothyroidism, cardiovascular disease, a weakened immune system, male infertility, cognitive decline and increased incidence of various cancers.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that the diets of as many as 1 billion people might lack sufficient Selenium for their well-being. Since much of the Se in human diets is derived, either directly or indirectly, from edible plants, the lack of Se in human diets is generally attributed to crop production on soils with low Selenium content.
Selenium enhances crop growth and crop tolerance to abiotic stresses when applied in trace amounts. It also reduces the salt stress damage by enhancing their antioxidant defence and detoxification systems.
